Scale Model Exhibition 2020 Review

Although storm Dennis did its best to disrupt proceedings the annual Scale Model Exhibition organised by the SVAS went ahead on Sunday 16th February. A few exhibitors and traders were unfortunately not able to make it due to the weather conditions but there was still plenty to see!

Over 40 different exhibitors and traders did make it to display at Shuttleworth and hundreds of visitors braved the storm to admire the handiwork. We were also fortunate to have the grand-daughter of Percival Chief Designer Arthur Bage visiting and she took the opportunity to display a selection of her grandfathers original drawings and scrapbooks of photographs of Percival designs.

The modelling competition was particularly close this year with judges Rob Millinship and Rory Cook commenting ‘Modelling standards continue to be very high, in some categories it has been very difficult to choose a winner. The modellers have been very careful with the fine details which make our job that much harder!’ However, the judges did manage to pick some winners and they were:

Winner 1/72nd & Smaller Scale – 1/144th P51 Mustang by Robert McDonald

Winner 1/48th & Smaller Scale – 1/48th Supermarine Channel by Hugh Beyts

Winner larger than 1/48th – Skeletal Fokker D.VII by Mick Norris

Junior Modeller – Typhoon British Legend by Joby Girling

Best in Show – the John Morris Memorial Trophy – Shogun Samurai on horseback by Bob Parker

Hopefully some of these inspire you to take part, there is an entire year to build entries for next year’s competition which will be on Sunday 21st February 2021!

Admiring Models

Event organiser and SVAS Chairman Kevin Panter said “Everybody that I have spoken to has enjoyed the day and although it is hard work putting on, it is worth it to see the enjoyment that people get from the day.”

The competition at the event was especially difficult to judge, but fortunately, Collection pilots Peter Holloway and Rob Millinship and engineer Rory Cook, were able to come to agreements for each of the categories. Judge Peter Holloway said “The standard of models around the show this year is particularly high and the junior modellers in particular are very good. In a few years time the junior modellers today could be in with a shout of winning the other competition categories!”

Shuttleworth Model Success

The SVAS organised Scale Model Exhibition took place on the 19th February and has proved to be a very successful event in many ways.

While traders and exhibitors filled the majority of the engineering hangar at Shuttleworth, the Spitfire remained on display to provide a contrast to the smaller models displayed around it and to also allow a number of happy visitors to take the opportunity to sit in the Spitfire.

Event organiser and SVAS Chairman Kevin Panter said “The event has been the most successful yet, both in terms of visitor numbers attending and also in the quality of models. The standard of modelling this year has been exceptional; the judges have had a difficult time in picking the winners of the competitions”

The winners of the Competitions were:

  • Category 1 – 1/72nd Scale or smaller – Rick Harland, A.W. Siskin IIIa
